We can say that the corona virus pandemic has not only changed our daily lives in the past 2 years, but has also affected IT. Working from home, hand in hand with the cloud, has led to the acceleration of the digital transformation of many companies. With the faster pace of digitalisation of business processes, we are also seeing an increasing emphasis on automation, sometimes even talking about so-called "hyper-automation".

Home office

Working from home, which was a fallback solution in the early days of the covid-19 pandemic, is becoming the norm two years later, in 2022. According to a study by Stanford University, home office workers are even 13% more productive and 39% complete tasks ahead of schedule. Developers are churning out more tools for working efficiently from home, and an integral part of the latest version of the Windows 11 operating system is the built-in Microsoft Teams a business platform that enables text communication, video calls and includes data storage for file storage and integration of other applications.

Cloud

The trend for 2022 is clearly hybrid cloud and multi-cloud environments. Hybrid cloud combines the benefits of private and public cloud. Despite the cost of some fragmentation of corporate data, the multi-cloud environment offers the optimum use of each individual service provided. The Accelerate State of DevOps study shows that companies using a cloud hybrid or multi-cloud solution are 1.6 times more likely to meet internal performance metrics than companies that prefer a conventional cloud solution.

No code a low code

By the terms "no code" and "low code" we can imagine the creation of programs without the need of knowledge of a programming language or with only knowledge of the very basics. It is not about classical application development, but rather about "mouse programming", i.e. moving and composing function blocks in a graphical environment. Typically, it is the creation of automation batches that enable streamlining processes in marketing, HR, etc. The Power Automate tool, which is a "low code" development environment, is even part of the Microsoft Office suite of applications. Similar environments are also included in some ERP systems.

Hyperautomation

We will stay with automation for a while, or rather its younger sister "hyperautomatization". It is the mutual synergy and combination of automation components:

  • AI (Artificial Intelligence)
  • ML (Machine Learning)
  • RPA (Robotic Process Automation)

Gartner, the unofficial coiner of the term, says that more than 70% of large companies are currently implementing dozens of hyperautomation projects. Gartner also predicts that companies will reduce their own operating costs by more than 30% by 2024, thanks to hyperautomation. According to Gartner analysts, hyperautomation is inevitable, and companies that resist the pressure to be agile, efficient and scrappy will find it difficult to compete with their rivals.

Hyperautomation often leads to the creation of a digital twin organization (DTO), which allows a company to visualize the relationships between processes, functions and indicators. Thanks to predictive AI, DTOs will also enable the anticipation of potential disruptions in production and lead to increased efficiency. In its study, Deloitte estimates that the DTO market will grow at an average rate of 38% in the coming years, reaching a value of over $15 billion.
